In the small podunk town I grew up in, most major stores were, at least, an hour drive away. Road improvements and speed limit changes have changed this, but in my youth it was pretty terrible.
Knowing that most people wouldn't drive an hour to buy things cheaper, local retailers tended to price gouge $20-40.
