The N64 is a weird architecture, optimization wise: in Mario 64, the CPU is idle most of the time (as it's waiting on the GPU to finish rendering a frame).
But it improves the framerate to optimize the code on the CPU, because then it's idle longer, and when the CPU is idle, it's not using the slow-ass memory!
Meaning the GPU has uninterrupted access to it
