It's a carrots and sticks approach to religion in which the only way to avoid Hell is to embrace their deity. I was trying to explain to a pastor that doing right things to avoid punishment is the wrong reason to do right things, that the reason for doing right things is simply that they are right. This was completely beyond that pastor's comprehension. She literally could not imagine what I was saying.
She otherwise seemed intelligent and interesting to talk to. But this gobsmacked me.
