Your average prisoner is a person dealing with a shitty upbringing and homelife, extreme childhood trauma, addiction, poverty, and active mental health issues. These things are ubiquitous across the prison population. This means causes of crime are pretty damn clear.

At any point we could address them, and wipe out almost all crime, but we don't. Why? Well the reason for that is obvious enough. The power-hungry, corrupt, psychopathic, and narcissistic assholes who make up our politicians, corporate elite, and police forces need a "bad guy" to be a scapegoat, so they can justify their power over people and distract from their own misdeeds.

So long as they can convince people that their "real enemy" isn't them, but rather their fellow human beings (and some of the most vulnerable ones at that), and that they alone can fight them by throwing people in prison, they can convince people to give them power "for your own safety".

Prisons have never been about keeping people safe. It's about covering up the failings of our society and the actions of the elites.
