By 18 I was traveling around Southeast Asia on my own. My first solo trip was right after high school and I went to Angkor Wat by land. I was so familiar with all the buses and trains of the region, I also spoke most of the languages (Thai / Teochew / Malay), I never felt lost even for a moment. Even without data or a phone.
That was truly liberating.
