Regarding the new improved name change procedure in DE: Registration becomes invalid if you don't show up to a personal appointment within 6 months. You cannot change your last name. If you're not a German citizen, you need to first declare that German law should apply to you before changing your name and gender marker and you need to prove that you have habitual residency in Germany and an eligible residence permit. Name changes under the new law are only allowed when simultaneously choosing a new gender marker. One year freeze period before you can change your gender marker again. If you switch back to a gender marker you've previously had, you cannot choose a new name. Different authorities have different interpretations around rules regarding jurisdiction and number of names. Some authorities advice you to obtain an expert opinion in advance to prove that your chosen first name(s) comply with gender conventions.

To be fair, changing your gender marker has become far easier under Germany's new crappy self-ID law (#SBGG) compared to the procedure for obtaining a GRC in the UK. It looks like German name law will unfortunately remain a patchwork of increasingly absurd rules for the foreseeable future.
