Qt used to be closed-source software, which landed KDE in hot water with the old-skool free software people.
GTK was free software from the start, so it was the obvious better option for people who prefer free software. It used to have a good interface, too.
Although Qt is now distributed with free variants, it's still largely controlled by a for-profit entity with minor preference to the non-free version.
