December 6, 1989 A male entered Montreal École Polytechnique in Canada carrying a semi-automatic weapon, which he used to gun down and murder 14 young women; injuring 13 more. His tirade was accompanied by him screaming: “YOU ARE ALL FEMINISTS!”
We remember and honour the lives of these 14 extraordinary young women, cut short by misogynistic terrorism on #Dec6 1989—yet #GBV and acts of gender or sexuality-based mass violence remain clear and present dangers to this day. And that’s where the action component comes in.
Take it seriously. Learn to recognize the early warning signs, and speak out whenever you hear disparaging anti-gender, anti-trans, and/or any other misogynistic rhetoric. Even if you’re hearing it in a “friend or colleague’ group. It isn’t always easy to interrupt, but it’s never okay to hear it. Stepping up always matters.
