I can see one almost legitimate use-case. You have a TV setup where you control the app with a gamepad, and you want to set the its library's dir, and the app opens the portal's file chooser. That file chooser can be used with a keyboard, a mouse, a touchpad, or a touchscreen, but not a gamepad which is all you have, so you are stuck, you can't even leave it. But hat's an issue with the desktop not supporting gamepads, avoiding portals is a dirty workaround.
