An old Native American went into the bank and asked for a $500 loan. The bank employee started preparing some paperwork.
'What are you going to do with that money?' he asked him.
'I’m going to the city to sell the jewelry I made myself.'
'What can you offer as collateral?'
'I don’t know what collateral means,' said the Native American.
'Well, collateral is something of value that can cover the cost of the loan if something happens. Do you have a car?'
'I have a 1949 truck.'
'That won’t be enough,' said the bank official.
Finally, they agreed that the Native American would also pledge his own jewelry as collateral, and he took out the $500 loan.
A few days later, the Native American went back to the bank with a pile of money. He counted it out, paid off his debt, and put the rest in his pocket.
'What are you going to do with the remaining money?' asked the same employee.
'I’ll take it to my tribe,' replied the Native American.
'You could deposit it in our bank,' suggested the employee.
'I don’t know what a deposit is,' replied the Native American.
'Well, you give your money to the bank, and the bank takes care of it, and when you need that money, you can take it out.'
The old Native American thought for a moment and then asked:
'Okay, and does the bank have anything of value that they could leave as collateral?
