I feel like a possibility is settling in:

Each of the twitter alternatives may simply fail to be compelling enough and reach "critical mass" ... leaving Twitter as the last standing.

Some factors:
- competition and fracturing
- experimentation with federation etc

I think it'd come down to the idea that Twitter simply meets people's expectations, it's a "known" entity ...
while the rest suffer from expectations, hype, misunderstandings, and disappointment.
