personally I don't think operating systems are necessary anymore, the fundamental idea is resource sharing and resources are extremely cheap now. sharing resources has major security concerns that would be avoided entirely if programs were running on their own cores, with their own memory, and could just talk to each other through dedicated communication ports
but that's a fairly radical position
