When the *India* sailed from Greenock in Scotland June 1841 it carried 193 bounty immigrants and 5 crew.
Length of ship 117.7 feet - beam 24.7 ft across β (36 metres x 7.5 m) - with a very impressive poop cabin, according to the blurb
A pirate brig sailed past India then turned back - wanting to know what the India was carrying, where it was headed, and if there were any Spanish speakers on board - the brig sailed on - Phew - and was later captured by HMS Acorn.
Two weeks later, X miles (reports vary) from Rio De Janiero, the India caught fire.
βthe third mate and one of the boys were below about one o'clock pm, drawing off spirits, when the candle they used accidentally fell on some spilled rum, which immediately caught fire, and the flames spread with such rapidity that all efforts at extinguishing the tremendous blaze were unavailing, and the ship soon became one mass of flame. Another ship a French whaler, was fortunately in sight, about nine miles to windward, but nearly an hour elapsed ere those on board of her became aware of the state of the Indiaβ¦β
