Well, actually tbf, from polling figures it seems to be extremely unpopular with the general population. (In the UK the population voted for parties promising to lower immigrantion, whilst repeatedly doing the opposite).
Western states are in favour of open borders. It does wonders for GDP stats or something ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
