#Trump has recently shared a CNBC article quoting a rather outrageous statement of #Putin saying that âEurope will stand at the feet of its masterâ (US) like a dog. Trump shared it with no comments.
Is it outrageous and arrogant? Letâs see.
In my opinion, itâs just as outrageous as telling a drunk about the death of yet another friend from cirrhosis or chain smoker about lung cancer. Is it brutal? Yes, definitely. Is it escalatory? Certainly yes. But it never comes as the first warning.
When polite and rational explanations no longer work, you move on to more ruthless arguments and hope these will get through. And that, in my opinion, is the crux of Trumpâs rhetoric.
Remember Kelloggâs interview from six months ago, where he quite clearly explained Trumpâs views on the current war - Trump believes it could have been avoided. Not by making concessions to Putin, but on the contrary, by firmly communicating intentions backed up by concrete actions.
Trumpâs main criticism of Europe in this case was that, having observed its communication with #Russia since 2008, it is difficult to say what is that we really want to achieve. The dreamy âletâs go back to the way it used to beâ does not count as a mature position when someone - like Putin - clearly communicates that the current arrangement does not suit him. His words were followed by actions - war in Georgia, brutal murders and sabotage on EU territory and the response of the affected countries was⌠none. As if nothing has happened, and âletâs not be escalatoryâ.
An example of strong and clear communication for Russians were the messages sent on 15 November 2015 by Turkey and in February 2018 by the USA (I leave for the reader to check what happened then).
To a certain extent, the EU gas directives 2009-2019 were also such communications, although the political wrangling over their formulation constituted the opposite message and was typical of the EUâs relations with authoritarian regimes.
Therefore, I donât think Trump agrees with Putinâs arrogant statements. I rather think that the purpose of quoting them is to show âlook what your spinelessness has led to, pull yourselves together and decide what you wantâ.
