Finland and Sweden are both clamping down on strong pain killers because of the opiate addiction scare. I hate to think what that sort of thing could do to end of life pain relief.
I almost certain I've heard of individual cases somewhere, where terminally ill patients were denied opiates because they're addictive, but can't for the life of me remember where that would've been.
I've also heard that doctors used to prescribe strong pain killers for end of life -stage patients, despite of them shortening the patient's life span, but that they've become a lot more wary of that.
The whole thing sucks in so many ways, and it doesn't look like anyone's suggesting any actual solutions.
