I've learned a lot in the past couple days about the sort of person who blogs a lot about computer security and has convinced themselves that makes them an expert

- deeply emotionally attached to the Signal messaging app
- uncritically accepting of whatever 'quantum' bullshit companies announce
- only capable of understanding quantum computing by metaphor

this results in a pretty explosive mix where if you criticize Signal's threat model at all they quickly become incoherent and start writing science fiction stories about how the mean government is going to save your chat data until they can build an omnipotent sky computer to decrypt them Any Day Now

the fact that using Signal at all requires you to buy a tracking device from a tracking company, tell it who all your friends are, and then pay another tracking company for a unique ID? that's a problem that will also be solved Any Day Now and in the meantime you can work around it with the infinite money you surely have

so, after reading hundreds of lines of confused bickering, here is my advice regarding the Signal messaging app:

If someone tells you to install Signal because that's what they use, and you feel like it, use Signal.

If someone tells you to install Signal because they have Strong Opinions About Computer Math, don't bother.
