Lab question - Any suggestions for good (free if possible, but small cost OK) software to accomplish the following:
I am looking for a very simple system to share short reports with each other. This system needs the following properties.
1. Fully text based.
2. Fully backup able by just copying directories to another hard drive or the equivalent.
3. Provides notifications on a website/app so that I can check it from anywhere.
Importantly, I am not looking for a "lab notebook". We have a very workable system for all of our data and meta-data. I am also not looking for some complex video monitoring of the system or automated recordings. Again, we have that just fine.
What we are currently doing is that we have an intralab email group and after anyone runs an experiment, they send an email to the group that includes basic information (which rat, which task, how many laps, how much food, etc). This provides me three things: (1) I can see that the experiment has been done and animals have been checked. Importantly, this comes to systems I already check regularly and doesn't require me to go look at a dozen weird places. (2) We have a quick and easy record of notes from the experiments. (3) If someone needs to cover for the rat, they can backcheck those emails.
The current system has two problems. (1) We can no longer back up our email. (2) New people can't see old records.
Any suggestions?
