As a former software architect, I can tell you, people like that are why I won't work under that title any more. It's short-sighted to the point of negligence. They were lucky to get 10 years from "the marketing copy said it will be okay".
Companies try like the plague, to operate on trust; sometimes refusing to negotiate legal agreements. If someone's "trust" means they won't put it in binding writing, then they are not to be trusted. And it's not trust if you use a contract.
