I think one thing that people who lead relatively secure and affluent lives don't understand about being poor is that long term planning is much harder when you're poor (just like bulk buying at places with member fees is). If you're worried and struggling to survive now it's very hard to plan for the future or to know if you can even afford a future. This doesn't mean poor people don't dream of better futures, it just means they have less or no resources to plan or enact future plans. This becomes even more relevant if you're part of a demographic at risk of being murdered by police or other people.
