It sounds like he justified it by going off of upkeep costs VS cost of the plane and if it costs $5,000 yearly (just an example, you know more about this than I do) to do a checkup on a $100,000 plane each year plus whatever else is involved then he thinks he'd be better off spending $25,000 per year on a $1,000,000 plane since it is less percentage wise.
It does seem odd to me that he'd skip turbo props and go to jets though, especially since they probably aren't able to cruise at a slow enough speed to check out his properties like a turboprop would.
