It's not just the satellite data. Debris washed up on the beach at Réunion Island. They used current data and weather data, and marine biologists tracked the barnacles attached to the debris, and all that data brought them to the same place that the satellite data indicated. If 3 independent types of data arrive at the same spot, and that data matches the satellite data, I'm inclined to believe that's the spot.
