OK, after a day's wrastling with my LILYGO T-Echo #meshtastic radios' configuration, taking a whole day to get them flashed to the latest firmware and doing everything wrong, they are back to working with the new code.
And I figured out (roughly) the path forward to getting wires attached to them to see/do little digital things outside the radio box.
After 40 years I think I have to write another BBS program, lol. One that runs within something like an AdaFruit Feather, low power (enough) for battery+solar, outdoors use. Still looking to avoid, but all the meshtastic BBS stuff is bulky stuff. I want one or three cubic inch type solutions. And absolutely nothing that boots from writable media.
The meshtastic BBS software I've seen is scarily enough like the original CBBS, like ham BBSs, really primitive terse message interface stuff, appropriate for this environment. This is a bit out now, first thing will be to get a switch to light an LED across the network.
