For detection at long range, radar is still the only option, but it's possible that either the Russians have an upgraded, or new, radar that is outside the capabilities of the Mig-29's radar warning system, or that a switch from semiactive homing to active homing eliminated a telltale radar signature that the Ukes had been keying off of. Active homing is the new feature, similar to the AMRAAM, possibly with in-flight update via datalink.
