After my first two weeks with a CGM I've been able to collect a lot of data and determine some patterns in my blood glucose levels. It's been very helpful. But also somewhat depressing to see big spikes whenever I eat.
I've determined that I can basically not handle more than a tiny amount of carbohydrates without severe spikes in my blood glucose. When fasting, I can, with injections of 2-5 units per hour, and larger doses around 2AM & 5AM, maintain a steady glucose level around 110.
But throw food into the mix, and it gets much more difficult. Leafy salads aren't terrible, and most meats seem to be ok (though I'd prefer to go sparingly on them). I have digestive issues with nuts and seeds. Things made with grains or rice are very bad for my glucose, and I do not do well with fruit, though I seem to be able to handle small quantities of blueberries.
It's proving to be very frustrating trying to figure out things I can eat that won't cause big spikes in my blood glucose.
The spikes do not seem to be very manageable via insulin. When I had previously worked on insulin/carb ratios, I had found that I did well with 1 unit : 1.6g carbs. This no longer appears to be the case. I'm seeing spikes even when I have things carefully timed so that the digestion is matched to the peak insulin action and with a ration of 1:1. More work will be needed to figure out a new working ratio, but I can't bring myself to work on this as it's becoming painful when my glucose gets elevated
