The NYT has made me think even less of it without writing about gender. I almost thought for a moment that a new EO had been issued calling for the retraction of the #arseniclife paper.
#arseniclife was the collapse of the entire institution of science into a singularity of failure. The NYT tries to hide the only moral of the story worth knowing here: that people placed at every high level of science can sometimes come together in a mass trance and lie about the most elementary aspects of reality. Then they can apparently get cover from the NYT a decade and a half later to make it seems as if this was all in the course of science and boy were people mean.
We all knew this didn't make any sense moments after it was announced, what we could not believe is how this managed to happen at NASA. Look at Steve Benner during the press conference, he is gritting his teeth the entire time.
