ubuntu is based on debian based on gnu/linux kernel
mac is based on darwin based on freebsd
there's no dev language required to use either linux || bsd || mac. maybe some commands to get things done. but even an entry-level computer enthusiast can pick it up. at the surface it's workflow. linux and bsd give you more interfaces to interact with the kernel in an open and meaningful way. you don't need to know any of that to write a love note on your computer.
