When people hear about local newspapers closing down, many of them (like Melissa Lee) think something like 'so what, people in that community can read news online'. Which is true, but completely beside the point.
The core work of newspapers has never been printing news on dead trees. It's collecting and *verifying* that news, in the first place. The most robust way to do that is with a *team* of journalists, who can check each other's work, and back each other when they ruffle feathers.
