Browser extensions can get you pretty far, but they are sandboxed by the browser in important ways.
For instance, you can't add custom native UI to the browser with an extension - just a goofy little popup. If you wanted something like a "Nostr sidebar" where you could drag web highlights over to drop on your friends to share with them over Nostr - that would be impossible with an extension.
