My nephew has a good friend who tried to kill herself yesterday. She is 13. They have been friends for years and I've heard second-hand how strict her parents are.
She's talked about how rough her home life is, and she's trying to figure out her identity, and she's often miserable.
She asked my nephew if he thought the roof of their school was high enough that if someone jumped off, would they die? And then later that evening, she did it.
She survived and has broken legs and other fractures. I really hope that this gets some attention on her environment. I hope they can help her heal in every way.
My nephew is distraught. He didn't know why she was asking him that so he didn't see it as a cry for help. He is also 13, and now he has to deal with this fallout.
It's tragic that this young person is so bereft of hope that she tried to end her life. It's tragic that the kids at that school have come face to face with this. I'm sad and angry and worried and frightened and a whole lot of other things.
