I don't directionally disagree with that with the premise, but the argument has the sign wrong.
If you don't agree, ask yourself, if basketball or baseball or football paid like ultimate frisbee, would the top players be better or worse than they are today because they're intrinsically motivated? Obviously worse despite intrinsic motivation.
