Tonight, there will be a full harvest "Supermoon", and partial lunar eclipse, all rolled into one. The moon will appear full for nearly 3 days. Earth's shadow will begin obscuring the moon at 8:41 PM Eastern time, however it will be hard to see until about 10:13 PM, when "… the top edge of the Moon starts entering the full shadow." 10:35 PM EST is the official "full moon", but "from Newfoundland and Greenland Time eastward across Eurasia, Africa, and Australia to the International Date Line", it will be Wednesday. Did you catch that all my #Aussie lovelys?
According to Gordon Johnson, on the NASA website, tonight's full moon, "… is a Partial Lunar Eclipse; a SuperMoon; the Corn Moon; the Harvest Moon; the Fruit or Barley Moon; the end of Ganesh Chaturthi and the start of Pitru Paksha; Madhu Purnima; the Mid-Autumn, Mooncake, or Reunion Festival Moon; Chuseok; and Imomeigetsu or the Potato Harvest Moon."
Want to learn more about any or all of these moons? Gordon explains in great detail in his article linked below. There's also a link to live stream the eclipse on the NASA "Science Live" YouTube channel. It's definitely something to check out, but don't take it from me, taken from these guys:
Ralph Waldo Emerson: "The sky is the daily bread of the eyes."
Stephen Hawking: "Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet."
