I really do think that one of the biggest reasons people fall back on the "nothing to hide" argument is because they're scared of just how much data governments and companies harvest and they don't know how to take action. Because of this, they gaslight themselves.
This is why I'm a firm believer that we need to have incremental categories of privacy actions people can take. It frustrates me to no end when someone comes to a privacy channel and gets the whole "ditch absolutely EVERYTHING except Linux, self-hosted cloud & a custom ROM".
Truth is, until we make it easier for the average person to actually understand privacy and grasp the ways they can take action, we're going to see very little progress in getting people on board with this movement.
