Astronomers have discovered a supermassive black hole in a cluster of galaxies about 3.4 billion light-years from Earth. It contains about 3 billion solar masses and should be blasting out so much energy that it quenches star formation nearby. Using the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, astronomers have measured very little heating around it, and gas has cooled down so much that active star formation is all around it. Could the black hole be cooling its surroundings?
