The result of these differences is that in many European countries, a large majority of immigrants do not have the citizenship of the country in which they live, even if they were born there. This last bit is unimaginable in the United States and much of the Americas, where birthright citizenship is standard practice.
And the number of non-national immigrants is growing quickly, no doubt in part to more and more restrictive naturalization laws.
