An undated photo by Japanese photographer, Michio Hoshino. As a young man, he became fascinated by Alaska and sent a letter to the mayor of the Village of Shishmaref asking for permission to visit. The mayor responded 6 months later and Hoshino visited and stayed in Shishmaref for 3 months in 1972. He is considered a prominent wildlife photographer and has been compared to Ansel Adams. In 1996, Hoshino was mauled to death by a brown bear inside his tent in the Kamchatka region of Russia while on assignment. In 2008, the city of Sitka, Alaska raised a totem pole in his honor.
