What I missed entirely, due to Tom Cruise being like 5'6", is that the Jack Reacher character is described as a genetic freak in the books. 6'5", 300+ lbs., a freak metabolism which seems to be able to turn junkfood into muscle, and a demeanor that is a little too calm to be normal.
That is a much more interesting sounding character.
