When the Spanish began exploring north they came to a vast desert. (Today the Sonoran and Chihuahuan desert.) After crossing this they came to a land of fertile river valleys with people settled in cities. They hoped that they would be able to "extract" resources here like they had from the Mexica (Aztec) people. So they named the place after that hope. In the end both Mexico and New Mexico take their name from the same place, the valley of the Mexica.
