As an anarchist I'm grateful to Jimmy Carter, in a way. He's proof that the power of office can't be wielded responsibly and morally, no matter how decent the officeholder. He showed that even the quintessentially moral, upstanding person can't escape the consequences of hierarchy to wield that power in consistently rational, good ways. He is proof that presidents shouldn't exist, that the problem isn't just who has the power but that it exists at all.
Here was your Great Man, just as faulty as all the rest.
