Yes, but my last screenshots date back to May 2020, so I may not remember in full clarity, how it was.

Yes. Heh, I remember how when around level 18–23 I’ve lost hard to one boss (if I recall correctly, it was the naked dude, the boss chamber is at the end of a long winding path in the sand-covered ruins, you can get tired just running there three times in a row). I’ve lost my chips twice there. The original set and whatever was left. Restarted around 5–7 times. Then I turned my brain on and beaten it without chips (the garbage collected on the way to bossroulette doesn’t count). Which afterwards made me think, that they are a distraction mechanic intended to make you play longer. Before you realise, that you can do anything even without them.
I’m not saying that they’re useless. But if the game would require you to farm a chip set every time you lose one, wouldn’t that be killing fun? The Japanese devs still remember, that games are played for the fun, so they (I believe it) could not introduce that as a requirement for progressing with the game, or with bosses in particular. And if this is not a requirement, then they are technically just an extra, something that is not necessary to have. Something that /you may be not having at all/ – as intended. “Then why chips are added to the game?” you will ask next. My guess is… the chips are just a fun mechanic, and their primary use in on the arenas – which are another “extra” for the game. Now that I think of it, the combo showcasing videos were often captured in the arenas, and it looked like those videos were showcasing chips at the same time.
Just my two cents, I’m not a huge fan of this particular series or fighting games.
