It represents "eight rumormongers being investigated," it represents "the pneumonia of unknown cause is preventable and controllable, with no signs of human-to-human transmission," it represents Wuhan, a city of 13 million people, transforming overnight into an isolated island resembling a zombie city.
It also represents the silent New Year, the closed doors across the nation, and the panic and fear of 1.4 billion people. Moreover, it represents how this COVID-19 whistleblower's body, after having lost all vital signs, was subjected to a cruel performance of repeated intubations and defibrillations, until its last drop of public opinion value was squeezed out before finally being laid to rest.
However, for Dr. Li Wenliang himself, none of these meanings matter anymore. He entered his eternal sleep in that quiet winter at the age of 34.
Yet he also lives on forever. For five years, Dr. Li's Weibo page has become China's Wailing Wall, and time has not erased the sorrow of that night.
