It doesn't necessarily have to be GMO, a lot of "classical" plant hybrids (made by selectively cross pollinating different lineages) have sterile or low yield seeds. A lot of GMO plants, like Monsanto's "Roundup Ready" soy, are not (in the classical sense) hybrids, and produce fully viable seeds. This causes both biosafety (GMO plants can cross pollinate, and grow from seed in the wild), and societal problems. 1/2
