Governments are always corruptible. I don't care how perfect and nice you think your government is. I don't care if you believe that your government has no possible way to harm you. I don't care if you believe that government has your best interests in mind. The most horrible tragedies humanity has ever experienced have been created by governments. They always become corrupt. Read some of the oldest books in which mankind has recorded history. It is the same story over and over again. You are the only one who stands between an evil governing body and your family. I bet you would be thankful if you had a weapon that the government was scared of. Would you rather fight tyranny with a wooden bat, or a lethal firearm that keeps wicked, evil government bureaucrats fearful of you and kept in their place?
