Rant time. I think I'm getting old...
Well I don’t know but… I’m starting to have a sour taste in my mouth with ordering online. I’m wondering if the delivery personnel are getting sloppier and sloppier or if it’s just me, getting easily annoyed due to the age thing or whatever…
To be perfectly honest, a few years ago, you could get deliveries at the wrong address (one of our postmen was notorious with his dyscalculia, leaving packages at 4650 instead of 4560 and vice versa), loss of a package, damaged goods or whatever, but now a lot of the delivery personnel don’t even bother phoning you to let you know the package is at the door, or they need access to the building to put the item(s) in a safe place against theft. How many times, lately, have I learned via email that the delivery has been completed and that I have to run down to see where the package is?…
At first, when ordering, you’ll get an estimate of date for the shipped items to reach your door. Example: at first they tell you guaranteed delivery date on Wednesday, so you plan your week accordingly. Then, all of a sudden, they let you know via email, that your delivery will be on Monday instead, so a quick change of plans is needed here. I'm sure a lot of people are happy to see that they will get their orders earlier than first estimated, but it annoys me to no end being caught off guard like this and having to double-check this will not interfere with what I had planned.
And another thing. When you physically go to a store to get the things you need, you chose a suitable time and place, you can see what you are buying, you can select the items on your list, making sure everything is in good shape. But the landscape has changed when you go to the store: they all keep pretty much the same items, choice is more restricted than it was, and if you want to get something specific not available on the shelves, you have to buy online, anyway.
Maybe I’m not in a very Merry xmas spirit…
