I do wonder though if future improvements to user interfaces could enhance idealistic donations and retroactive support

For example, the new Nostr version of GitHub could easily support zaps/contributions

Will the direct P2P nature of these protocols paired with their unrestricted use facilitate the funding of open source development?

The UI/UX will only improve and the network effect will only strengthen from here
