The amino acids in the protein contain nitrogen which is metabolized and excreted as urea. If you overdo it you can cause problems but even elevated BUN is not a problem if your kidneys are functioning properly. These boilerplate concerns are usually overblown, I find, though often cited. eGFR is apparently what competent doctors use:
