The trick is that notifications need to come from a server which means either you need a bot crawling the relays or a silent notification which tells the local mobile app to spin up and check relays. The latter takes up battery, the former requires a cloud service running.
We don’t have DM’s exposed in Nos but when we do we’ll have notifications. RIght now Nos can handle the encryption part of DM’s but doesn’t have a UI for them.
I’m not sure how Amethyst does it because as far as I recall, Vitor Pamplona (npub1gcx…nj5z) was trying to avoid running any services.
