Our acts has a long horizon, and most of the time, we reap the rewards of the things our ancestors or we did way back.
This means if we do the things wrong now, we will only see the negative impact of it in 10 or more year steps. But when we see, it is already too late. Like if you want to sit now under a tree, that you did not plant. You can do nothing about it. You can only plant now to get the benefits later...
We have to learn to estimate the impacts of our choices, and supress our short term happiness for our long-term well-being. Also we have to learn from history the consequences of certain actions, behaviours.
