Update on my Acorn A4000 mouse: I couldn't leave it and had to investigate further. The mouse is getting 5 volts, all buttons are working. The issue is that the IR LED's that operate X&Y axis have died. If I shine an LED through - both the axis move, I managed to open a menu:
