Today's historic #photo of the day: Exactly 38 years ago today, a disused broad gauge siding laid with ancient double-headed chaired rails leads to a bluestone goods shed behind the northbound platform at Riddells Creek, Vic, October 4 1986.
Chaired rail, common in the UK, was rare in Australia. It was used only in the very early years of railways in Victoria, but it fell out of favour by about 1870. Note the distinctive bulky metal chairs connecting the #rails to the wooden sleepers.
